HIV, particle. Computer artwork showing the structure of an HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) particle (virion). HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). Each virion consists of a core of RNA (ribonucleic acid, coloured spheres, centre), the genetic material of the virus, enclosed in a protein capsid, and surrounded by an outer lipid membrane. The spiky structures protruding from the outer layer are surface glycoproteins.
