Shoulder joint. Computer artwork of a posterior view looking down on the bones and ligaments (white) of a shoulder joint. Also shown is the articular cartilage (light grey). At the shoulder joint, the humerus (upper arm bone, lower left) articulates with the scapula (shoulder blade, centre). The bone at upper centre is the clavicle (collar bone), which rests on top of the scapula and sternum (breastbone), helping to stabilise the shoulder. The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint, with the 'ball' being the head of the humerus, which rotates in the 'socket' part of the scapula. The other bones of the arm are at bottom left.
