Comet Lovejoy (lower left) above the Earth's limb, as seen from the International Space Station (ISS). Comets are icy bodies from the outer solar system that boil and form a bright tail of gas and dust as they approach the Sun. Comet Lovejoy reached its closest approach to the Sun on 16 December 2011. This image was obtained on 21 December 2011 by NASA astronaut Dan Burbank, commander of ISS Expedition 30.
