Bering Sea, satellite image. North is towards upper left. Clouds, snow and ice are white. The Bering Sea, over a thousand kilometres across, is bounded by Alaska (upper centre), the Bering Strait and Russia's Chukchi Peninsula (upper left), and the Pacific Ocean (down right). The western boundary (not seen) is Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. The southern boundary is the Aleutian Islands (arc, centre right). Water colours include algal blooms. Image data obtained on 2 May 2009, by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite, part of the Earth Observing System (EOS).
