Caption

Mars-500 landing simulation. Diego Urbana (Italy, ESA) carrying out a simulated 'Marswalk' using tools designed for Soviet lunar missions in the 1960s and 1970s. The Mars-500 project was conducted between 2007 and 2011 at the Russian Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP) in Moscow, Russia. The final stage, held from 3 June 2010 to 4 November 2011, placed six crew members in an isolation facility to simulate a 520-day mission to Mars. The aim was to study the psychological and medical aspects of long-duration human spaceflights. Photographed during the 30-day 'Mars landing' period in February 2011.
