Caption

Geothermal power station. View of a borehole connected to a pipeline from the Pauzhetka power station in Kamchatka, eastern Russia. Kamchatka is a highly volcanic region so has very hot bed rocks. Water is pumped underground where it is superheated by the rocks, when it comes back to the surface it turns to steam which generates electricity.
