Sample of the element carbon (C) in its graphite form. Carbon has the atomic number six, and is a non-metal that can exist as several allotropes, including diamond and amorphous carbon as well as graphite. The allotropes differ due to the arrangement of the atoms and bonds. Graphite is formed of sheets of atoms arranged in hexagons, which can slide over each other easily, resulting in a soft mineral. Carbon has the highest melting point of all the elements, subliming at 3642 degrees Celsius.
