Caption

Evaporating water from a brine solution using a sand tray. Brine is a solution of sodium chloride (NaCl, salt) in water. A watch glass containing the brine solution is placed onto sand in a heat-proof dish. By applying heat to the sand rather than directly to the water, evaporation can be speeded whilst boiling is avoided. Once all the water has evaporated, a solid sodium chloride residue is left on the watch glass.
