Oro-antral communication. Artwork of a human head showing a missing tooth that has developed into a passageway ('communication') between the mouth (oral cavity) and the maxillary sinus (antrum, red). This is known as an oro-antral communication. If it becomes inflamed and produces pus, it may be termed a fistula. Such openings can close up naturally, but may need to be drained or otherwise treated for infection. Such conditions can arise when teeth are removed from the upper jaw. The facial muscles and bones are also shown.
