Dark honey fungus (Armillaria ostoyae) growing on a rotting tree stump. Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies, reproductive structures, of a fungus. This fungus can spread over large areas, killing trees as it spreads. One single organism in the Malheur National Forest, Oregon, USA, covers 880 hectares and is the largest living organism ever found.
