Knee of 75-year old woman one week after a partial knee replacement operation known as a partial knee replacement, The knee is bruised and swollen. The wound is covered by a dressing. The patient wears elasticated stockings, for 24 hours a day, to compress the foot and leg helping the veins circulate blood. This is designed to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a possible complication for patients following surgery. Blood thinning drugs such as aspirin or Dalteparin are also used for the same purpose for a short period after the operation.
