Knee replacement surgery. Close-up of a knee during total knee replacement surgery. The kneecap (patella) and the ends of the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia) have been removed. Prostheses will be implanted into these bones to form an artificial knee joint. Knee joints need replacing when the protective cartilage that surrounds them is lost. Cartilage can be lost due to injury or osteoarthritis.
