Carl Runge (1856-1927), German mathematician and physicist. At the beginning of his career Runge worked on a number of problems in algebra and function theory, including giving numerical solutions of differential equations. From 1886 he moved away from pure mathematics to study the spectral lines of various elements. His mathematical approach to spectroscopy produced very accurate results that lead to important advances in the science.
