Caption

Nurse taking a meningococcal swab from a patient. This test will show if the patient is a carrier of Neisseria meningitidis bacteria. The swab will be wiped onto an agar plate that will be incubated to allow any bacteria present to grow. N. meningitidis can cause meningococcal meningitis (swelling of the membranes surrounding the brain) and meningococcaemia (blood poisoning), both of which can be fatal.
