Weathered boulder. A close-up of a boulder that is undergoing 'onion skin' weathering or exfoliation. This type of weathering is found in deserts and other areas of temperature extremes. The strain of contraction during cold periods and expansion during hot periods gradually weakens the rocks' outer layers. Eventually these outer layers break off altogether.
