Squamous epithelium. Laser scanning confocal micrograph (LSCM) of a section through stratified squamous epithelial cells. Epithelial tissues line the cavities and surfaces of structures throughout the body, and also form many glands. Squamous epithelium is characterised by its most superficial layer consisting of flat, scale-like cells. Epithelial tissue that is two or more cells thick is known as stratified epithelium.
