Convection cloud formation. Diagram showing the formation of clouds by convection. Cold air (blue arrows) sinks downwards to be warmed (by sunlight or heat from the ground). This warm air (red arrows) rises and carries moisture upwards. As the warm air ascends, the moisture condenses to form clouds, which may then release the moisture in the form of rain.
