Volcanic lava flow. Artwork of a lava flow produced by an erupting volcano. The lava is molten rock from below the Earth's crust, rising to the surface where it will cool and solidify to form new rock. Depending on the type of eruption and magma, the volcano may form either a cinder cone shape, or that of a composite volcano (stratovolcano).
