Fly eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing the lenses (ommatidia, hexagonal) that make up the compound eye of a fly. Each ommatidium is a tiny simple eye that sends a signal to the fly's brain. The brain combines the thousands of images to form a mosaic view of the world. The image is not sharp but is excellent at detecting movement. Magnification: x2,800 when printed 10cm wide.
