Gale Crater landscape, as imaged by NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars. This rover, part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, landed here on 6 August 2012. This view looks south and shows a close-up of the wider terrain visible from the rover. In the foreground is an area of gravel. In the distance are dark dunes and layered rock at the base of Mount Sharp which is the rover's ultimate objective. Image obtained on 9 August 2012 by the rover's 34mm Mast Camera. This version of the image has had its colours enhanced ('white balancing') to aid analysis of the landscape as it would appear under daylight on Earth.
