Curiosity debris on Mars. Colour-enhanced satellite image of impact marks (blue) caused by debris from the landing of NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars. This rover, part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, landed in the Gale Crater on 6 August 2012. This impact mark, and secondary impacts, are from the rover's rocket-powered descent stage (sky crane). The impacts from the descent stage revealed darker basaltic sands below the surface dust and soil. Image obtained in September 2012 by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter satellite.
