Ammonia. Molecular model of ammonia. The blue sphere represents an atom of nitrogen, the white spheres represent hydrogen. Ammonia is a pungent- smelling colourless gas, lighter than air and very soluble in water. Ammonia occurs naturally in some gases from geothermal springs. It is manufactured industrially by passing nitrogen and hydrogen over a catalyst (the Haber process). Ammonia is used mainly in the manufacture of nitrogenous fertilizers, nylon, some explosives, nitric acid, and plastics.
