Femoral nerve block. Surgeon preparing a patient's groin for a femoral nerve block prior to upper leg surgery. An anaesthetic will be injected into the groin to block the three nerves located there, which serve the hip, front of the thigh and knee. A nerve block is often combined with a general anaesthetic. This allows the strength and amount of anaesthetic to be reduced, therefore reducing any risks associated with the drugs. It also provides longer-lasting pain-relief after the surgery than just a general anaesthetic alone.
