An experimental laboratory bioreactor. Biotechnology involving liquid cultures of bacteria may be used to synthesise products such as bioplastics, liquid fuels such as biodiesel, or to degrade pollutants. The picture shows two research-scale bioreactors in use to develop bacterial populations able to decontaminate water from a combined heat and power unit that uses pyrolysis of wood chips to generate heat and electricity. Pollutants from the wood chip source mean that this effluent water cannot be discharged into the sewage system without prior treatment. The research aims to develop an appropriate bacterial population for treatment of the water. The picture shows the reactor vessels with associated equipment that is controlling input of the wastewater, as well as monitoring the conditions within the vessels, such as pH, concentrations of gases, degree of agitation, and temperature.
