Caption

Atrophied pituitary gland. Coloured sagittal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the brain of a patient with an atrophied pituitary gland (hypophysis). The pituitary is a hormone-secreting (endocrine) gland at the base of the brain (bottom right). It secretes hormones that regulate a wide range of processes including homeostasis, growth, metabolism and sexual reproduction. Atrophy of the pituitary causes hormonal imbalances that can have wide-ranging effects.
