Spondylodiscitis. Coloured sagittal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the lumbar (lower) spine of a patient with inflammation of the spine. This is spondylodiscitis, inflammation of the vertebrae (spinal bones, blocks) and the intervertebral discs. The third and fourth lumbar vertebrae (L3 and L4) are affected. The inflamed area is pressing on the spinal cord (white), which causes severe pain. Spondylodiscitis is often caused by infection and treatment is with antibiotics and rest.
