Hermes Trismegistus is the Greek designation of Thoth, the Egyptian god of magic, science and invention who also taught the people to write and calculate. As a divine source of wisdom Hermes "Thrice-greatest" is credited with extensive writings, and the Hermetica is a collection of Egyptian-Greek texts from the second and third centuries AD dealing with the mind, cosmos, alchemy, astrology etc. Detail from the late 15th c. marble-inlay mosaic from the Duomo, Siena.
