Anaesthesia. An anaesthetist monitoring a patient during a heart surgery procedure in hospital. General anaesthesia is a drug-induced coma state in which the patient is unconscious, relaxed and pain-free. Inducing and maintaining this state is the job of the anaesthetist (also known as an anaesthesiologist). During surgery the heart and breathing are monitored for signs of surgical stress or, in overdose, dangerously depressed rates. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in 2010.
