Photostimulation research. A patient undergoing photostimulation in a research unit at a psychiatric hospital. It is thought that repeated flashes of specific wavelengths of light may stimulate or inhibit production of certain chemicals that change biological processes such as neural triggering. Photographed at the Serbsky Institute for Social and Forensic Psychiatry in Moscow, Russia. Once used for the 'psychological treatment' of dissenters and political activists by the Soviet state, the facility is now used to treat drug and alcohol addictive patients who are involved in crime. Photographed in 2010.
