O.Kurpashev, a Russian oncologist, with the controls of the Yakhta-3 hyperthermia device used in cancer therapy. Hyperthermia is the heating of a tumour using focused radio waves. This can make some cancers more susceptible to attack by radiation of drug therapies. This device allows very localised heating, overcoming problems associated with whole body hyperthermia (WBH). Photographed at the Institute of Medical Radiology of the USSR Academy of Sciences at Obninsk in 1991.
