Brain research. X-ray in sagittal section of the skull of a patient, showing the position of implanted gold wires (straight lines from upper right). These wires are electrodes used in direct stimulation of the brain with small electric currents. Treatments based on such techniques include deep brain stimulation (DBS), used to treat chronic pain and Parkinson's Disease among others.This X-ray was made in 1977 at the Institute of the Brain, part of the USSR Academy of Sciences at St.Petersburg, Russia.
