At left is Thomas Weller (1915-2008), American winner of the 1954 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on polio; at centre is Albert Sabin (1906-93), American developer of the first vaccine against polio; at right is Viktor Zhdanov (1914-87), Russian-Soviet researcher who was instrumental in eradicating smallpox globally.
