Oxygen therapy. View of control panels for chambers used in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). In this kind of 'hard' chamber the pressure may be raised to up to 6 bar (600 kilopascal). The atmosphere is 21% oxygen, although patients in the chamber breathe 100% oxygen through a mask. HBOT was originally used for decompression sickness in divers, but it has been found useful in carbon monoxide poisoning, in the treatment of gas gangrene and may be of some use in cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. Photographed at the Academy of the Medical Sciences of the USSR, Moscow, in 1977.
