Gallstone surgery. X-ray machine positioned over a patient's abdomen during surgery to remove gallstones. A contrast dye will be injected into the gallbladder to highlight any blockages caused by missed gallstones. Gallstones (choleliths) are most commonly hard deposits of cholesterol that form due to an imbalance between bile and cholesterol levels. They are usually symptomless, unless one obstructs the bile duct, causing acute pain, jaundice and infection.
