Caption

Funicular railway. Passenger cars passing on the East Cliff Lift, Hastings, UK. This funicular railway opened in 1902 and is the steepest funicular railway in Britain. The counterbalanced cars are connected by cables passing over pullies in the upper station - as one goes up, the other comes down. The cars were originally moved using gravity, by filling tanks underneath the cars with water, but the system is now electrically driven.
