Pavel Ivanovich Belyayev (1925-70), Russian-Soviet cosmonaut. A talented pilot and renowned leader, Belyayev was an easy selection for cosmonaut training. His one mission was Voskhod-2 of 18-19 March 1965. During the mission his fellow cosmonaut, Alexei Leonov, became the first man to perform a space walk. During re-entry, the capsule's automated systems failed, so Belyayev had to perform the first ever manual re-entry procedure. He never flew into space again, and died in 1970 from peritonitis following an operation for a stomach ulcer. Photographed in 1965.
