Colonic diverticulitis. Endoscopic view of an inflamed diverticulum (sac-like outpouching) in the wall of the colon (large intestine). Diverticula such as this generally cause no symptoms and rarely have to be treated. However, they can become inflamed such as in this example, causing abdominal pain and tenderness around the left side of the lower abdomen. Most cases of simple, uncomplicated diverticulitis respond to conservative therapy with bowel rest and antibiotics.
