Smooth and rough shoe soles. The roughness and grip of the sole of a shoe depends on the material used. The smooth sole at left is made of leather, though the heel section (bottom) uses rubber to ensure more grip. The sole of the shoe at right is made from a moulded material such as polyurethane or rubber. The shape of the moulding increases the grip. The 'active air' elements help cushion the impact on the foot when walking and running in the shoes.
