Ethyl ethanoate, molecular model. The molecular formula of this organic chemical is C4.H8.O2. The atoms (spheres) are colour-coded: carbon (black), hydrogen (white) and oxygen (red). The atoms are joined by chemical bonds, with a carbon-oxygen (carbonyl) double bond at upper right, and an adjacent carbon-oxygen (ether) single bond. This combination is known as an ester. Also known as ethyl acetate, this chemical has a sweet smell, and is used as a solvent in glues, nail polishes and perfumes.
