Copper (II) oxide (CuO). This chemical contains copper in a +2 oxidation state, giving rise to the black colour. Copper (I) oxide, in contrast, is a red colour. The black oxide forms when copper metal is heated in oxygen. It is used in manufacturing in the chemical industry, and is also used as a pigment and an abrasive.
