Metal-acid reaction hydrogen collection. Apparatus for collecting hydrogen from the reaction (left) between a metal (zinc) and an acid (hydrochloric acid). One of the products of this reaction is hydrogen gas, which is being collected over water in the test tube at right. The properties of the gas collected can be tested, usually by igniting it with a lighted splint to produce a popping sound.
