Cereal packet label. Food label on a packet of cereal, indicating the presence of folic acid, additional vitamins and iron, no added colours, no artificial flavours, and controlled levels of sugars. The cereal is also marked as suitable for vegetarians. Folic acid (vitamin B9) is required for development of the foetus in pregnancy. It also ensures normal red blood cell formation and helps to maintain a healthy central nervous system. Deficiency can lead to the development of forms of anaemia and leukaemia. Iron is an element required in trace amounts in the diet. Iron supplements can be used to treat iron-deficiency in anaemia.
