Blood donation. Nurse inserting a needle into a donor's arm before attaching him to an apheresis machine. Apheresis is the process by which blood from a donor is separated into its components. This machine uses centrifugation to separate the platelets and plasma from the red blood cells. The platelets and plasma are retained while the red blood cells are returned to the donor.
