Pericarditis. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a section through the chest of a 59-year-old woman with chronic pericarditis. Pericarditis is an inflammation of the pericardium - the fibrous sac that surrounds the heart (orange, centre right). This causes accumulation of pericardial fluid or blood between the pericardium and the heart. If untreated the heart becomes compressed by the fluid and this can be fatal.
