Caption

Complex regional pain syndrome. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of a section through a 50-year-old man's shoulder, which is frozen and painful due to complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS, formerly reflex sympathetic dystrophy). CRPS is a chronic progressive disease characterised by severe pain and swelling. It is associated with dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system, resulting in multiple functional loss, impairment, and disability. It often affects an arm or a leg and may spread to another part of the body.
