Caption

Coronary stents. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scans of the heart (left) and coronary arteries (right) of a 48-year-old man showing a stent (white tube) that has been implanted in the anterior interventricular artery (part of the coronary arteries) to treat stenosis (narrowing). This procedure is known as coronary angioplasty. Stents are wire mesh tubes that are used to provide support of passageways within the body. Here they are being used to widen the section of artery that has become narrowed.
