Asteroid Icarus. Computer artwork of the asteroid Icarus during its close approach to the Sun. The asteroids lie in well-defined belts between the orbits of Mars & Jupiter, but some of them have extremely eccentric orbits. Icarus, with a diameter of 1.4 km, approaches closer to the Sun than Mercury, at which time it is believed to glow red-hot.
