Diffraction experiment. Simulation showing the variation with slit size of the diffraction pattern that results when a plane wave (top in each image) passes through a thin slit in a barrier. The resulting pattern is shown as: (1) an amplitude value distribution (red and yellow), with the amplitude value increasing from transparent via red and yellow towards white; (2) an intensity distribution (which increases from blue towards pink) at a certain distance parallel to the aperture. Here, the size of the slit increases from left to right and top to bottom, starting at upper left and finishing at lower right. For the variation with wavelength, see C014/7191.
