Liver surgery. Close-up of a piece of cut liver tissue about to be removed (resectioned) during liver surgery. This surgery is being carried out on a 55-year-old man who had obstructive jaundice and a suspected liver malignancy. Activated thrombin was used on the cut surface of the liver to obtain haemostasis (stemming of bleeding). The device used for the resectioning was a cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator (CUSA), which uses ultrasound technology to allow dissection with minimal blood loss. Subsequent histological inspection showed chronic inflammation only, with no malignancy.
