Oscar Pistorius (born 1986), South African athlete and double amputee, in the starting blocks for the men's 400 meters semifinal at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Pistorius was born without fibula bones (calf bones) and had both legs amputated below the knee at 11 month old. He runs on carbon fibre blades. In 2012 he became the first amputee to participate in the Olympics, when he raced in the men's 400 metres and the 4 x 400 metres relay. Photographed in London, UK, on the 5th August 2012.
